The Mentawai Islands are one of Indonesia’s most remote and memorable destinations, best known for world class surf, warm tropical water, and white sandy palm tree lined beaches.
Located off the west coast of Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands are made up of around 70 islands and islets stretching approximately 150kms along the coast of West Sumatra.
For surfers, the Mentawai’s are home to some of the world’s most famous waves. For everyone else, the islands offer clear blue water, beautiful beaches, tropical mangroves and a slower pace of life far from the crowds.
The Mentawai Islands have a tropical climate throughout the year, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The best time to visit depends on what you want to get out of your trip, particularly when it comes to surfing.
May to September (Peak Surf Season): May to September is generally the most popular time for a Mentawai surf trip. Days are typically sunny with light winds, with occasional tropical rain.
March to April & October to November (Shoulder Season): These months can bring drier weather and light, variable winds, with plenty of clear, sunny days. They can be a great time to visit the Mentawais with fewer crowds.
December to February: Christmas and the surrounding months can be more unpredictable, with a mix of sunshine and rain. Temperatures remain warm, and evenings can be cooler and refreshing.
Getting to the Mentawai Islands is part of the adventure. Most guests travel from Padang to Tuapejat by fast ferry before continuing by boat to Nasara Resort on Awera Island.

By Air: Flights are also available from Padang to the Mentawai Islands. From the airport, guests continue by road to Tuapejat before transferring to Nasara’s private boat. The flight from Padang takes approximately 45 minutes, followed by a road transfer to Tuapejat and the short boat ride to the resort. Our team will help coordinate your arrival and make the transfer to Nasara as straightforward as possible.
